I designed Rosário mugs and tumblers in memory of my grandmother. She was a devout Catholic who lived several hours away from us on the Silveira family farm. When my sisters and I were young, we would play hide-and-seek on our visits. These games always included our cousin Brian, who lived close-by. We played for hours because we had so much space. We would sneak in and out of barns with old milk cans and sheds with rusted tools, through the back door of the house, and into the closet that connected the two bedrooms and therefore had two ways out. We would crawl around hoping we had enough time to escape out the back porch. I remember looking up to see a dozen rosaries hanging on my grandmother’s dressing table mirror while I listened for the steps of whoever was “it.” While an abstraction, the dots on these pieces nonetheless represent her treasured beads but also the smells and images that we absorbed from the house that two generations of my family grew up in. These pieces are made with commercial clay and a studio-mixed green glaze.
