Introduction to Wheel Throwing
Learn how to wedge a small piece of clay, center your clay, turn balls of clay into cups or bowls using traditional European throwing techniques. You will be able to glaze and fire what you make. Three 3-hour sessions. 150 euros.
Practice Wheel Throwing
Learn how to prepare two kilos of clay using a technique called spiral wedging, get an introduction to traditional Korean throwing techniques, practice making three piece “sets” that are the same shape and size. You will be able to glaze and fire what you make. Class requires the ability to predictably center a ball of clay in 3-5 minutes. Three 3-hour sessions. 150 euros.
Paint Portuguese Tiles
Learn about traditional Portuguese tiles. You will learn how to paint on raw glazed tiles. You will learn about the history of tile painting in Portugal, the materials, the tools, how to transfer the sketch and the painting techniques. By the end you will have a colorful tile panel of 4×4 or 6×6 tiles.
Design a Meaningful Piece
Sort through your family history, select a person or story that is meaningful to you, design a piece that embodies the spirit of your memory, make a series of trial pieces, identify your favorite experimental pieces and replicate it ten times. You will be able to glaze and fire what you make. Class requires the ability to throw an average of three pieces an hour. Three 3-hour sessions. 150 euros.
Experiment with Foraged Materials
Bring leaves, sticky mud, clay, rocks, and sand to class. Make patterns, clay, and glazes with your materials. Test them in the kiln. Design a piece that captures the place you foraged materials from. You will be able to glaze and fire whate you make. Class requires the ability to throw an average of three pieces an hour. Three 3-hour sessions. 150 euros.
Manipulate Thrown Pieces
Throw a series of pieces, cut them in pieces and reassemble them into new shapes. Use wooden ribs and other tools to change the shape and texture of the pieces you throw. You will be able to glaze and fire what you make. Class requires the ability to throw an average of three pieces an hour. Three 3-hour sessions. 150 euros.
