Pico

I started making Pico vases and bowls to channel the spirit and energy of the Pico volcano. They combine commercial clay with foraged materials such as mud found on the side of the peak and lava sand from island beaches. I also made glaze from a special ash. When my ancestors left Pico Island, they abandoned vineyards along with many other families when the plant disease phylloxera started killing their grape vines. These vineyards became overgrown with trees and bushes that camouflaged what existed before. Now that these vineyards have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, people are clearing and burning the bramble. My glaze is made from bramble ash. These are entirely unique pieces because of the experimental way that they were thrown and manipulated and fired in a wood kiln.
